For those who plan on renting a boat, there are plenty of rental services available in the area that cater to different preferences and budgets. This way, you can choose the best-suited boat that meets your requirements and budget. Similarly, if you’re bringing your own power boat or kayak, Stockton Lake provides easy access to a boat launch area with ample parking space and well-maintained facilities.
If boating is not your thing, you can still enjoy the lake in other ways such as swimming or fishing. Stockton Lake offers various swimming areas with designated spots for picnicking and relaxing under the shade. If you plan on practicing your fishing skills, the lake has an abundance of catfish, bass, crappie, and other species for you to catch. There are also designated fishing piers which offer a unique experience to anglers.

- Stockton Lake: The lake itself provides ample opportunities for kayaking. You can explore its hidden coves and quiet bays, paddle along its shoreline, and enjoy the calm waters.
- Cedar Creek: Located near Stockton Lake, Cedar Creek is a popular spot for kayaking. It offers a serene and picturesque setting with gentle waters perfect for kayaking.
- Sac River: The Sac River, located near Stockton Lake, provides a peaceful and scenic kayaking experience. You can paddle along its meandering waters, surrounded by the natural beauty of the area.
- Little Sac River: Another nearby option, the Little Sac River offers a tranquil kayaking experience. With its calm currents and beautiful scenery, it’s a great place to enjoy a leisurely paddle.
- Aldrich Access: Launch at the boat ramp, head left under the underpass, and enjoy the great views to the mouth of the Sac River, including historic railroad trestles. Return to boat launch. I recently paddled this route; here’s a photo essay of my adventure.
- Mutton Creek Cove: Launch at the boat ramp and meander along the shore to paddle the no-wake zone throughout the entire area shore to shore surrounding the boat slips, marina, No Wake Cafe’, and coves. Return to boat launch. Kayaks can be rented at the marina. I recently paddled this course; check out my advenute here.
- Caplinger Mill: Arrange a shuttle for this picturesque float trip down the Sac River.
- Pomme de Terre River: Just 14 miles east of Stockton Lake, this river has a bit more of a current, which can make for a more exciting ride. Plus, there are plenty of places to stop and explore along the way, including sandy beaches and shady coves.
Make sure to check local regulations, water levels and conditions, and any necessary permits or permissions before embarking on a kayaking adventure.

Swimming
In the Stockton Lake area, you’ll find an array of options for swimming and enjoying the water.
- Stockton Lake State Park Beach: Only eight miles from Mutton Creek Getaway, Stockton State Park features a designated swimming beach area where visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim in the lake. Lifeguards may be present during designated hours for added safety. Check with the state park or marina office.
- Ruark Bluff Beach: Just a short five-mile distance from Mutton Creek Getaway, Ruark Bluff awaits with its own designated swim area, sandy beach, covered picnic pavilions, playground, basketball court, and convenient public restrooms.
- First Beach: Located on the southeast edge of Stockton, this public beach and roped swimming area offers several picnic tables and grills.

4. Orleans Trail Marina Beach: Located near the Orleans Trail Marina southeast of Stockton, this beach and public use area offers a sandy shoreline and clear waters, perfect for swimming and cooling off on hot summer days.
5. Crabtree Cove Recreation Area: Crabtree Cove offers a swimming beach along with various other recreational amenities. Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking in this scenic area.
6. The Greenfield City Pool: At the nearby town of Greenfield, Mo., the city pool is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. and Sundays available for private pool parties.

Additionally, there are several public campground areas managed by the Army Corps of Engineers offering a range of recreational facilities and amenities, including boat ramps, campsites, picnic areas, and fishing opportunities. Visitors to Cedar Ridge, Hawker Point, and Crabtree Cove can enjoy various water activities near the shoreline but may need to make use of their own portable chairs or towels for swimming purposes.

Bank Fishing at Stockton Lake
If you’re a fishing enthusiast, Stockton Lake is calling your name. It boasts excellent fishing opportunities that you won’t want to miss, including various fish species like crappie, white bass, catfish, and walleye.

Want to go fishing without a fishing boat? The Stockton Lake area in southwest Missouri provides several areas for bank fishing. Most of the marinas and public use areas on Stockton Lake provide a fishing dock as well as multiple shoreline areas designated specifically for fishing from the bank. These areas include Mutton Creek Marina, the peninsula near Greenfield Access, Orleans Trail, Crabtree Cove, Hawker Point, and Cedar Ridge. Anglers can choose from several spots along the shoreline to enjoy their hobby.
Renting power boats
There are plenty of marinas to choose from at Stockton Lake. If you’re staying at Mutton Creek Getaway, you’re in luck as the closest one, Mutton Creek Marina, is just four miles away and situated on the Mutton Creek arm of Stockton Lake. This marina offers boat and jet ski rentals, boat slip rentals, fueling service, a convenience store with boating supplies, and a floating restaurant called the No Wake Cafe’. To make things even better, the cafe’ features live music on Saturday nights through the summer – perfect for a fun night out with friends or family.

Traveling just a bit further, Stockton State Park Marina is a great option as well. It’s only eight miles away from Mutton Creek Getaway and offers two boat ramps and over 350 boat slips. You can rent fishing boats, pontoon boats, and personal watercraft here as well as find a lunch cafe’, fueling service, and supplies in the convenience store.
Before you head out to the lake intending to rent a boat, it’s important to make sure you have a boating safety ID card. Luckily, you can easily obtain one online at WWW.BOAT-ED.COM/MISSOURIRENTAL/. The process is quick and easy and will give you a 7-day temporary license. Just remember that you can only do this once per person, so make sure to plan accordingly.
Other marinas include Orleans Trail and Crabtree Cove. Stockton Lake has plenty to offer for those looking to spend a day out on the water.
Launching a boat
If you’re renting a boat or jet skis from a marina, your boat-for-the-day will likely be located in a nearby boat slip, and fueling services will also be conveniently located at the marina. However, if you’re bringing your own boat, you’ll be looking for a launch site. The marinas are still your best bet for boat launch if you need additional services and supplies from the store.

Mutton Creek Marina, Stockton Lake State Park, Orleans Trail, Ruark Bluff, and Cedar Ridge all provide boat rentals, boat slips, a store, fuel services, and other amenities for boaters and lake enthusiasts exploring Stockton Lake. These marinas provide a range of services and amenities to enhance your boating experience on Stockton Lake. It’s always a good idea to contact the marinas directly for more information on services, availability, and any specific requirements you may have.
In addition, Stockton Lake provides public access ramps managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who oversee the lake as well as the maintenance and operation of the boat ramps. These public access points for boat launching include Greenfield Access, Crabtree Cove, Hawker Point, and Masters Public Use Area.
