Off-season at Stockton Lake

January ~

Although we’ve been visiting the Stockton Lake area for many years, our experiences have been limited especially in the off-season. With each passing month, we’ve had opportunity to try different restaurants, meet friendly folks, and find things to do.

Above is the Dade County Courthouse and on the right is the historic Opera House in Greenfield.

While Stockton Lake offers many water-related activities from March to November, the off-season provides a slower pace and reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the busy season.

We’ve enjoyed shopping in Greenfield at the flea market as well as at Stockton. Hammons Black Walnut Gift Emporium and coffee shop is a local favorite with unique gifts as well as tasty hot beverages and light lunch fare such as soup and sandwiches.

Across the street on the Public Square is Abbie’s Burlap Bucket, a quaint antique store and boutique. Several other boutique and antique stores and flea markets are located nearby in Stockton that we hope to check out later.

As outdoor lovers, we’ve enjoyed the many walking trails along the lake. My favorite so far is The Kids Fishing Pond, an easy woodsy loop located near the Stockton Lake dam. The trail features art sculptures as part of the N.E.A.T (Nature Education Art Trail), as does the trail beginning at the dam’s visitor center parking lot.

The trail head at the Stockton Lake dam visitor center features “The Eagle” art sculpture.

Closer to Mutton Creek Getaway, the Hulstead Historical Park offers some trails.

Hulstead Historical Park near Greenfield, Mo. features a playground, historical buildings, a picnic shelter, hiking and horse trails, public bathrooms, a campground, and a shower house.

Right there at the cabin, guests can walk 1/2 mile down the seldom-trekked East Dade 42 lane, which ends with a historical cemetery with markers dated as far back as the 1800’s.

Although our wooded 20-acre wooded property behind the cabin features walking trails, the county road lane offers a wider, cleaner cut walking area, especially preferable if you’re not a fan of ticks, chiggers, and snakes! 🙂 By the way, the purple tape and paint means “no trespassing”, so please be respectful of our neighbors’ property.

The busy boating season will soon be upon us. In the meantime, we’re enjoying some quieter winter days here at Mutton Creek Getaway. For those who really want to unplug and wind down, we have old fashioned amusements such as puzzles, board games, cards, and reading materials as well as movies, X Box One and games, and Smart TV’s.

On mild winter evenings, the fire pit is also enjoyable. We hosted a bonfire as part of our family gathering on the unseasonably warm Christmas Eve this year.

Whatever your style, our hope is that the Mutton Creek Getaway provides an enjoyable retreat full of great memories!
