Hunting near Stockton Lake

April showers bring may flowers… and hunting season! Turkey youth season is early April for ages six to 15 only and later April thru early May for all other licensed hunters. Mushroom hunting is ideal during this time as well.

The Eastern species of turkey is the most common in Dade County near Stockton Lake.

Although we don’t allow hunting at Mutton Creek Getaway, there’s plenty of public land nearby. In fact, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation, more than 16,500 acres of wildlife surrounding Stockton Lake is available to the public for hunting.

The areas in green surrounding Stockton Lake indicate the 16,572 acres that are public lands open for hunting.

Mushroom hunting near Stockton Lake

Spring, particularly April, is the best time to harvest edible mushrooms. The morel species live in and on the edge of forested areas and often grow around ash, aspen, elm, and oak trees. They can also be found around dead and dying trees.

Morels are hollow on the inside, so slice them in half lengthwise to be certain.

Although morels are not hard to identify, they do have a poisonous look alike. See this article for more details about identifying morels.

Before cooking, we soak the morsels in salt water for a couple of hours and then rinse well. The most common methods of cooking are frying and saute’ing; however, they also make a tasty pizza topping or can be simmered as a sauce.
